Delhi's greatest luck is the Himalayas on its doorstep — but the "best" hill station changes with the season. Snow in January, cool green meadows in May, waterfalls in the monsoon, golden calm in October. Here's where to head, whenever you're going.
For snow — December to February
When you want to actually play in the snow, aim high. Manali & Solang are the reliable favourites, with Auli a brilliant, less-crowded alternative for skiing. Shimla–Kufri also gets good snow in peak winter. Try our Auli snow trip or the classic Shimla–Manali tour.
For summer cool — April to June
This is peak hill-station season, when NCR bakes and the mountains are perfect. Shimla, Manali, Nainital, Mussoorie and Dharamshala are all at their best — green, lively and comfortably cool. Book ahead; everyone else has the same idea. See Nainital & Mukteshwar or Dharamshala & Dalhousie.
For monsoon greenery — July to September
The hills turn lush and dramatic, but landslides are a real risk on high routes. Safer monsoon picks are the lower, well-connected stations — Kasauli, Lansdowne and Bir Billing — where the greenery is glorious and the roads more forgiving. A Kasauli weekend is ideal.
For autumn calm — October to November
Our quiet-favourite season: clear skies, thin crowds and crisp air. Almost every hill station is lovely now, but Nainital, Mukteshwar and Kausani (with its Himalayan sunrise views) are especially beautiful. Explore Kausani & Ranikhet.
How far is each?
