Kashmir isn't a single destination — it's four completely different trips depending on when you go. Snow in Gulmarg, tulips in Srinagar, saffron fields in Pampore, or golden autumn chinars: the "best" time depends entirely on what you want to see. Here's the honest month-by-month picture.
Kashmir season at a glance
| Season | Months | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–Apr | Tulip garden, blossoms, mild days |
| Summer | May–Aug | Green meadows, Gulmarg gondola, comfortable weather |
| Autumn | Sep–Oct | Chinar colours, saffron harvest, fewer crowds |
| Winter | Nov–Feb | Snow, skiing, frozen Dal mornings |
March – April: Tulips & spring
The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden — Asia's largest — usually blooms early April for about three weeks, and it's spectacular. Days are mild, orchards blossom, and the valley wakes up. This is one of the most beautiful (and popular) windows, so book stays early.
May – August: The classic summer trip
If you want the postcard Kashmir — green Gulmarg meadows, the gondola running, Pahalgam's rivers and comfortable 20–30°C days — this is it. It's peak family-holiday season and the safest weather bet. Our Kashmir Valley package runs its fullest itinerary in these months.
September – October: Autumn & saffron
Our quiet favourite. The chinar trees turn crimson and gold, the famous Pampore saffron harvest happens in late October, and crowds thin out after the summer rush. Days are crisp, nights cold — pack layers.
November – February: Snow & skiing
For snow lovers, Gulmarg becomes one of Asia's best ski destinations, and Srinagar mornings over a misty Dal Lake are magical. Some higher roads (like Sonamarg) may close with heavy snow, so itineraries focus on Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. It's cold — often below freezing — but the fewest crowds and lowest room rates of the year.
So when should you go?
Want snow? December–February. Tulips? Early April. The full green valley with everything open? May–June. Colours and calm? September–October. There's genuinely no bad time — just different trips.
Whichever window you choose, we tailor the Kashmir itinerary to the season (which gardens are blooming, whether Sonamarg is open, snow gear if needed) and arrange houseboat stays, shikara rides and a local driver. Compare durations and inclusions on our Kashmir tour page.
